The five-time World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo’s short-lived experience as a free agent has come to an end with an agreement to join Saudi Arabian club Al Nasser effective 1 January 2023 until 2025. In a deal reportedly worth €200 million per year. According to The Guardian reporter Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo will receive the highest football salary in history.

The 37-year-old was a free agent following his exit from Manchester United just before the World Cup in November. After giving an angry television interview in which he claimed to feel betrayed by Manchester United and that he did not respect their Dutch boss Erik ten Hag, the 37-year-old attacker departed the club last month.

During the FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo had denied that a deal had been agreed upon which would see him join the Saudi Pro League outfit. According to reports, on 30 December 2022, the agreement includes an annual guaranteed football salary of €90 million, with commercial and sponsorship deals, included bringing his yearly total salary to €200 million. He was also reportedly paid a signing-on bonus in the region of €100 million.

The Saudi football club posted a picture on social media of Ronaldo on Saturday holding up the team’s jersey and making the much-anticipated announcement. The nine times Saudi Pro League champions described the signing as
“History in the making. This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves. Welcome @Cristiano to your new home @AlNassrFC.”

Ronaldo was named in Portugal’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, making it his fifth World Cup. On 24 November, in Portugal’s opening match against Ghana, Ronaldo scored a penalty kick and became the first male player to score in five World Cups.
